Longcase Clocks
|
Richard Fennell of
London
Circa 1695
A fine William III period eight-day longcase
clock in walnut by this most notable early maker, Richard Fennell.
This example has a finely veneered walnut case of good proportions and small size. The hood has ebonised barley twist columns and a blind fret to the frieze. The long trunk door has a moulded edge and a lenticle glass. The base is raised on bun feet. The height is 78½ inches. The movement has been fully overhauled to the highest standard, is of eight-day duration and sounds the hours on a bell. It is of high quality workmanship as you might expect from this maker. The twelve inch brass dial is an early use of this size, and has a raised silvered chapter ring and well-cast corner spandrels. There is a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture. The dial is signed "Richard Fennell – London". |
