Rob Watts of Stamford (Lincolnshire)
Circa 1710
An early
eighteenth century English verge lantern clock by this well regarded
maker.
The lantern clock, or more correctly, chamber clock, was
the earliest form of domestic clock and was popular throughout the
seventeenth century. A much valued possession amongst the nobility
and the merchant classes.
This example by Rob Watts retains the
original verge escapement, most unusually the short bob pendulum swings
within the posted frame*, and displays the time via the original steel
hand to the raised chapter ring over a well-engraved centre.
